5 Cheap & Free Things to Do in Hong Kong

Updated: Jun 18, 2023

Hong Kong has quickly become one of our favorite cities in the world. There is so much to see and do that you will find it hard to get bored. Unfortunately it can also be expensive! So we've put together 5 things to see and do that are cheap and/or free. They are perfect if you are looking for some of the highlights of the city without spending a fortune. And in our opinion, they are some of the best things to do in Hong Kong anyway.

#1 Take a Ride on the Iconic STAR FERRY

Star Ferry in Hong Kong

The Star Ferry has been transporting passengers across Victoria Harbor, from Kowloon to HK Island, since 1888. Hop on and enjoy this 10-minute ride for just $0.25 to $0.50 USD. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the views of the harbor and the iconic Hong Kong skyline. Make sure you check it out both during the day and night! You might even be able to catch a different view of #2 on our list!

Symphony of Lights Show

Every night at 8pm on Victoria Harbor, the buildings of Kowloon and Hong Island Island light up for a free and dramatic 10-minute display of lasers, searchlights, and LED screens. And it's all set to music from the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

#3 Take a Trip Back in Time at MAN MO TEMPLE

Lanterns in Man Mo Temple

Man Mo Temple was built in 1847 and is one of the largest and oldest temples in Hong Kong. It was built by Chinese merchants to worship Man (the god of literature) and Mo (the god of martial arts). Enjoy this free escape from the bustling streets on Hong Kong, for a little peace and serenity inside this beautiful temple.

#4 Shop at the Many Markets, including TEMPLE STREET NIGHT MARKET

Exploring Temple Street Night Market

There are so many markets in Hong Kong! You could spend days just exploring these! Our favorite was the Temple Street Night Market, which is open nightly and has lots of shops and amazing food. Entrance to the markets is free, but bring your bargaining skills to land some amazing deals! Other notable markets include the Yuen Po Bird Garden, the Fa Yuen Street Market, and the Mong Kok Flower Market.

#5 Take a Walk Through HONG KONG PARK

Bird Eating Fruit at the Aviary

Last, but not least, take a walk through the beautiful green oasis of Hong Kong Park. Our favorite part of the park was the Edward Youde Aviary which is the largest Aviary in SE Asia. Enjoy watching over 80 different species of birds in this beautiful tropical rain forest setting.
